Can you believe it is already July??? It just seems impossible that the months are flying by so quickly. We have had a year full of fun and challenging workshops, and the 2nd half of our year will prove to be just as engaging!  We have had so much fun learning in this year’s workshops, and it has been nice to see new faces joining us!  There are just a few spaces left in our July workshop with Lauretta Crites. She will be demonstrating the techniques she uses to create incredible shimmery Tyvek Koi Fish! Her workshop will be held at Quilt in A Day on July 12th , from 9:30am – 3:30pm. Leave your sewing machine home, as this is going to be a hands on painting and preparation extravaganza. All the sewing you will do to finish your work of art will be done at home!

While Lauretta is showing us how she makes the material sparkle and brings a koi fish to life, just imagine using the technique for butterflies, birds, and in any other image that you want to pop in one of your wall hangings or quilts! The possibilities are endless! Please wear older clothing and bring an apron….you really want to wear something that you wouldn’t be heartbroken if some paint accidentally got on it! There will be a $10 class fee…so if you’ve already signed up for this workshop, please just bring your $10 to our July guild meeting.

Our August workshop is going to be given by Emily Bailey of Aunt Em’s Quilts! She will show you how to substantially reduce your cutting time, and get more accurately cut pieces by using die cutters. Do you have a die cutter that has been sitting on a shelf because you weren’t really sure how to use it properly?? Emily is going to take all the mystery out of using die cutters, and will show you just how fast you can go from preparing your fabric to having a finished work. Spots are available for this workshop, so please sign up on line or at our July guild meeting.

Our September workshop is by Linda Sullivan of Colourwerx. Linda will be teaching us 2 separate techniques so that we can produce our very own TOPAZ quilt! Linda is known for using lots of vivid colors and graphic images in her quilts, and we know this is going to be a fantastic course. This is a great time to step away from your usual color palettes and try something different! Linda always manages to share her enthusiasm for creating fun, even quirky quilts…that are pieced with precision. You will surely stretch your creativity and imagination in this workshop! Be sure to sign up now…we have been getting a lot of interest from folks in other guilds about attending this workshop. It is a first-come, first-served kind of moment!

Don’t forget – We host a Sit & Sew Session at Quilt In A Day on the Monday following our guild meeting. This is a FREE opportunity for all guild members to sew with others. We love having folks bring their special projects to work on, and it is a great way for folks that attended a workshop to actually complete their projects before they turn into a UFO! Our Sit & Sews run from 9:30am – 1:30pm…and then we typically head out for a bite to eat as a group. We would love to have you join us. JULY

Our July speaker is Lauretta Crites!  You won't want to miss it! Here is a bit about Lauretta in her own words.

"Like so many of you, I learned to sew at home. I watched my mother make many of my sister and I’s school clothes. I made many of my own dresses for school dances, costumes for Halloween and even my high school prom gown. All of this led eventually to attending CalArts school of theater as a Costume Designer. I spent 15 or so years working in Los Angeles theaters with Center Theater Group and the Los Angeles Opera.

But, things change and after a while it was time to move on to the next chapter in life. It was about this time that I attended the Road to California quilt show and saw ART QUILTS for the 1st time. I was in rapture!!! I had no idea fabric could be used that way.  The next year I scoured the Road to California catalog for art quilt classes and I was off and running.

Many of you know me through my vendor booth “A Couple of Old Broads” which I have run with my best friend Cindy Myers since 2014. It was so much fun to go to quilt shows all over the west and make money while we did it! I loved meeting so many of you in the booth and having the chance to teach through my demos.  One of my quilts won a ribbon at Houston Festival and that recognition earned me the opportunity to exhibit with the Dinner@8 group and allowed me to meet some fellow artists I am privileged to call friends.

Today I am focusing on teaching and speaking at Guilds and quilt events such as Quilt Show Reno and The Houston Festival. I love interacting with creative souls and seeing people light up with the possibilities of applying the things they learn in my classes."
