A letter from the President

Hello friends and Happy June!

I missed seeing you at our May meeting and want to express my gratitude to Nancy Feder and the rest of the team for stepping in so capably to lead our gathering.

As you know, I was attending an Empty Spools Seminar (don’t you just love that name?) at beautiful Asilomar Conference Grounds in Monterey County. I signed up to take a class from Hilde Morin, a fiber artist and quiltmaker from Portland, Oregon.

The opportunity to learn from an expert over a period of time, with quilters from all over the country was such a delight and a perfect opportunity to try out new techniques and skills and stretch my quilting muscles a bit.

I attended this year with a quilting friend of mine who traveled from Whidbey Island, Washington for the five day retreat. We get together a few times each year for these sewing trips and we decided that we have been quilting friends for over 30 years! Imagine!

Also attending the conference were my ECQ friends Nancy Carpenter and Heather Callaghan.

Shortly before I got there, I learned that both Laurie Paurazas and Wendy Keeping,  El Camino Quilters and Guild members would also be attending the same class! And Jane Frank, one of the members of my ECQ Friendship Group was also taking Hilde’s class along with two of her friends from San Diego.

While enjoying meals in the large dining room I met so many lovely people…one sweet future friend from Escondido who thought that maybe she’d give our Guild a visit sometime soon!

Do you sense a theme? Friends…and quilting…they go together so well!

But, you don’t have to leave town, travel long distances, or spend a lot of money to have these same great experiences. Every month we offer fantastic workshops right here in town taught by well-known instructors and fiber artists for just a fraction of the cost. What better way to set aside a day to work on a new skill, learn from an expert and get creative alongside a group of new friends. I hope this serves as a bit of an encouragement to you. Please read through our newsletter and check out the Calendar section for the upcoming workshop offerings.

I’ll see you there!   Happy Quilting,

Susan Stanchfield

ECQ President
